I finished the apple tree painting on New Year's Day. It looks properly celebratory.
For the new year, a new journal. My old sketchbook was nearing fullness, and the paper buckled easily.
This journal was my first attempt at hand-binding. It is 150 lb. Fabriano Artistico watercolor paper that I cut from large sheets and bound with my handspun linen.

I am starting some online lessons for art journalling... Life Book 2014. There will be new lessons every week by a number of different instructors, and I hope to learn some new skills and practice some new techniques in my journal this year.
This coming year seems daunting to me in many ways. I know that my art will be taking a back seat, perhaps for some time, after the baby comes in May. In the meantime, the regular responsibilities of life seem to grow greater, and my ability to juggle them seems to diminish. Home, church, homeschooling, therapies, and another book to illustrate.
These words from 2 Corinthians are a comfort right now. (Thanks to my brother-in-law James for his recent blog post on this passage in relation to the New Year. ) This life is not meant for our comfort or ease. And the overwhelming nature of it at times even though it might seem to threaten, is actually for our good and God's glory.
But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed----always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus may also may be manifest in our body. 2 Corinthians 7-10
May you find His burden light in the New Year.
